Description:
04 AWG, I/C, Copper Conductor, 85 mils silicone rubber insulation, polyester film separator helically applied,.saturated asbestos braid covering overall.
The Testing program was divided into two (2) groups as follow s:
Groun I Three (3)*forty (40) foot samples were involved each sample containing one (1) field installed splice. The sample identifications are as follows:
No. 2 - Dried, Not Rinsed.
No. 4 -
Unconditioned.
NO.
C, -wasnea and Dried.
Group 11 Two (2) samples were tested, one thirty (30) foot and ona (1) forty (40) doot in length. The thirty (30) foot length had two (2) splices nstalled at the Phelps Dodge facility by Con Ed personnel under the s§ e
_on of the Raychem Co. personnel, the splice supplier. The forty (40) foot sample was used as a control and tested in the "as received" condition.
Test Procedures All tests were performed strictly in accordance with ICEA Pub. No. S-19-81 (sixth edition) titled "Rubber Insulated Wire and Cable for the Transmissi:.
and Distribution of Electrical Energy".
The ioilowing tests comprised the testing program:
Physical and Aging Requirements per Section 3.17.1 Accelerated Water Absorption per Section 3.17.3.2 Voltage Tests per Section 3.17.2.1 Insulation Resistance Tests per Section 3.17.2.2 A) Group. I samples were first tested to determine IR at 60°F with and after removal of the splice from each sample.
Next, all samples (splices removed) were subjected to the AC and DC voltage withstand test.
The samples were then removed Sfrom the room temperature bath and placed into a 750 C water bath.
After a 24 hour2.777778e-4 days
0.00667 hours
3.968254e-5 weeks
9.132e-6 months
soaking period (no voltage) the IR at 750C was measured.

OZONE RESISTING ILICONE RUBBER CABLE TESTS PAGE NO. 2/
The E14-60 (at 75 C) test completed the testing procedure.
General Observations - Group I Samples With the exception of the IR measurement on the samples containing the splices and the DC withstand test on sample No.'s 4 and 6, the cables met all applicable current requirements of ICEA S-19-81 for this class of insulation.
- The unusually low IR values obtained on the samples with splices are attributed to. improper installation of splices.
. The DC voltage failures experienced on sample No.'s 4 and 6 may have been the result of mechanical damage due to handling. llcwever,'
examination of faulted areas revealed no obvious evidence of mechanical damage.
- 13)
Group I-sample testing, IR at 606F, DC and AC withstand, met applicable current requirements of ICEA S-19-81 for this crass of insulation. This was true for both the spliced and unspliced samples. The IR measurements at 75C indicate good quality 600 volt insulation as evidenced by converting the 60OFeK factcr of 4000 to a 750C K factor of 25.
