January 05, 2010 Mr. Preston D. Swafford Chief Nuclear Officer and Executive Vice President Tennessee Valley Authority 3R Lookout Place 1101 Market Street Chattanooga, TN 37402-2801
SUBJECT:
WATTS BAR NUCLEAR PLANT, UNIT 1 - TRITIUM PRODUCING BURNABLE ABSORBER RODS (TAC NO. ME2775)
Dear Mr. Swafford:
The purpose of this letter is to document the number of tritium producing burnable absorber rods (TPBARs) being irradiated in the current Watts Bar Nuclear Plant (WBN), Unit 1 Cycle-10.
The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) issued Amendment No. 77 to Facility Operating License No. NPF-90 for WBN Unit 1 on May 4, 2009 (Agencywide Document and Management System Accession No. ML090920506). This amendment was in response to Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) revised application dated December 31, 2008 (ML090090044).
Amendment No. 77 increased the maximum number of TPBARs from 400 to 704. Your application, dated December 31, 2008, stated that although the maximum TPBAR limit requested is 704, the number of TPBARs to be irradiated in WBN Cycle-10 is planned to be approximately 576. You requested the NRC give high priority to this amendment to enable implementation of the increased TPBARs in WBN Unit 1 Cycle-10.
However, based on discussions with your staff on December 7, 2009, we understand that in the current WBN Unit 1 Cycle-10 that the number of TPBARs being irradiated is 240, which is less than the 400 approved in an earlier license Amendment No. 67 (ML073520546).
P. Swafford If you have questions feel free to contact me at 301-415-1389.
Sincerely,
/RA/
