SUMMARY

OF PUBLIC SCOPING MEETINGS CONDUCTED RELATED TO THE REVIEW OF THE VERMONT YANKEE NUCLEAR POWER STATION,

LICENSE RENEWAL APPLICATION (TAC NO. MC9670)

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff conducted environmental scoping meetings related to the review of the Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Station (VYNPS) license

renewal applications submitted by Entergy Nucl ear Operations, Inc. (Entergy). Two public meetings were conducted on Wednesday, June 7, 2006, at the Latchis Theatre, 50 Main Street, Brattleboro, Vermont. Approximately 200 people attended the meetings. The attendees

included members of the public, representatives of the NRC staff, NRC contractors from

Argonne National Laboratory, Entergy, the applicant, local citizen organizations, and local news

media. Public comments and questions addressed a wide range of issues including spent fuel

storage and disposal, emergency planning, security, and alternatives to license renewal.

In addition to the public meetings, the staff held an extended open house related to the environmental review scoping process in the vicinity of VYNPS on June 6, 2006. The open

house provided members of the public with an opport unity to talk informally with the staff and view NRC informational displays and brochures. Approximately 25 people attended the open

house. A combined listing of attendees for the public meetings and the extended open house is provided in Enclosure 1. Enclosure 2 is a copy of the meeting handout provided during the

extended open house. Enclosure 3 is a copy of the meeting handouts provided during the

scoping meetings open house. The official corrected transcripts for the afternoon and evening

meetings, and for the extended open house, are publicly available at the NRC Public Document

Room (PDR), located at One White Flint North, 11555 Rockville Pike, Rockville, Maryland, 20852, or from the NRC's Agencywide Docum ents Access and Management System (ADAMS). The ADAMS Public Electronic Reading Room is accessible at http://adamswebsearch.nrc.gov/dologin.htm.

The transcripts for the afternoon and evening meetings, and for the extended open house are listed under Accession Nos. ML061840033, ML061840029, and ML061840036, respectively. A copy of the slides used during the NRC's

presentation is also available in ADAMS under Accession No. ML061790476. Persons who do

not have access to ADAMS, or who encounter problems in accessing the documents located in ADAMS, should contact the NRC's PDR reference staff by telephone at 1-800-397-4209, or

301-415-4737, or by e-mail at pdr@nrc.gov.
