NRC NEWS U. S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION Office of Public Affairs Telephone 301/415-820 Washington, DC 20555-0001 E-mail: opa@nrc.gov Web Site: www.nrc.gov No.03-064 May 21, 2003 NRC MEDIA WORKSHOP SCHEDULED JUNE 24-25 The Nuclear Regulatory Commission will hold a two-day workshop June 24-25 at its headquarters in Rockville, Maryland, for news reporters covering the nuclear industry.

NRC senior managers and staff will brief participants to the extent possible on enhanced nuclear power plant security measures, emergency preparedness, the threat of radiological dispersal devices (dirty bombs), and government efforts to improve tracking and monitoring of radioactive materials. Other sessions will cover reactor safety issues such as reactor vessel degradation at Davis-Besse and South Texas Project; spent nuclear fuel transportation, storage and disposal with regard to the proposed repository at Yucca Mountain, Nevada; the proposed use of mixed-oxide fuel in reactors; and the disposition of slightly contaminated materials.

All sessions will be on the record and should be especially useful for reporters from communities near nuclear facilities. Participants will gain valuable contacts and will receive background materials to use for quick reference.

There is no charge for attending the workshop, but reporters must cover their own food, transportation, and lodging expenses. A block of rooms is being held at a reasonably priced motel in the vicinity of the NRC.

Because the size of the meeting room is limited, those interested in attending need to contact the NRC Office of Public Affairs by June 6 at (301) 415-8200, (e-mail: opa@nrc.gov).
