NRC NEWS UNITED STATES NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION OFFICE OF PUBLIC AFFAIRS, REGION II 61 Forsyth Street SW, Atlanta GA 30303 Web Site: www.nrc.gov No. II-03-009 March 14, 2003 CONTACT: Ken Clark (404)562-4416 E-mail: OPA2@nrc.gov Roger Hannah (404)562-4417 NRC TO MEET WITH DOMINION ENERGY OFFICIALS TO DISCUSS SAFETY PERFORMANCE AT NORTH ANNA NUCLEAR POWER PLANT The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff will meet with Dominion Energy officials on Thursday, March 20, to discuss the results of NRCs annual assessment of safety performance at the North Anna nuclear power plant near Mineral, Virginia.

The meeting will be held at 2:00 p.m. in the main auditorium of the North Anna Nuclear Information Center at the plant site. The public is invited to observe the meeting, and NRC officials will be available before the conclusion of the meeting to answer any questions.

A letter from the NRC to Dominion Energy addresses plant safety performance during the previous year and forms the basis for the meeting discussions. The letter states that, overall, North Anna operated in a manner that preserved public health and safety and that plant performance was at a level requiring no additional NRC inspection beyond normal baseline activities. The letter, which is available from Region II Public Affairs and on the NRC web site at www.nrc.gov/NRR/OVERSIGHT/ASSESS/LETTERS/na_2002q4.pdf , says the NRC staff will conduct three non-baseline activities. One will be special inspection activities associated with North Anna reactor vessel head replacements, one will be a review of the plants implementation of Interim Compensatory Measures required by an NRC Security Order, dated February 25, 2002, and the third will be routine inspections of activities associated with North Annas Independent Spent Fuel (Dry Cask) Storage Installation.

Current performance indicators for the two units at the North Anna plant are available at www.nrc.gov/NRR/OVERSIGHT/ASSESS/NA1/na1_chart.html and www.nrc.gov/NRR/OVERSIGHT/ASSESS/NA2/na2_chart.html
