In accordance with Technical Specification (TS) 5.6.4 for the Brunswick Steam Electric Plant (BSEP), Unit Nos. 1 and 2, Carolina Power & Light (CP&L) Company is submitting the enclosed Monthly Operating Reports for September 2002. These reports are being submitted to the NRC by the 15th day of the month following the calendar month covered by the reports, as specified in TS 5.6.4.

There are no regulatory commitments being made in this submittal. Please refer questions regarding this submittal to Mr. Leonard R. Beller, Supervisor - Licensing/Regulatory Programs, at (910) 457-2073.

As a result, the present value for Design Electrical Rating (i.e., net megawatts electric (MWe)) has been revised from 867 MWe to 895 MWe to reflect current equipment limitations and testing activities associated with the first phase of EPU implementation. The Design Electrical Rating value is subject to further revision as EPU testing and implementation activities continue.

SUMMARY

Unit No. I was shut down on September 21, 2002, for approximately eight days, to perform a scheduled fuel bundle replacement outage. On September 30, 2002, the turbine/generator was taken off-line to repair a steam leak in the main steam system. Repairs were completed and the generator synchronized to the grid in the early morning of October 1,2002.
