Region I opened by stating that the purpose of the meeting was to obtain a

more firm understanding of Niagara Mohawk's (NMPC) approach and progress re-

garding resolution of previously noted problems with contractor performance in the Quality Assurance / Quality Control area; especially.in view of recent ITT Grinnell QA/QC problems currently under review by NRC.- j.

NMPC responded by describing the status of their ongoing acti6ns noting that communications were improving and NMPC surveillance of contractors was in- -
creasing.

ITT Grinnell QA/QC staffing was discussed. NMPCstatedthatduetothIedif-ficulties in recruiting, the QA Manager position was not yet filled. Region I urged that NMPC take a more active role in assuring that this key position be filled promptly.

The meeting c6ncluded with the understanding that.NMPC would be prepared to meet again in six weeks to discuss the~ status of their ongoing actions for improving contractor perfonnance.
