NRC REGION I COMBINED INSPECTION 50-387/92-20; 50-388/92-20 The enclosed report documents a resident safety inspection conducted by Messrs. G. S.
Barber and D. J. Mannai, and others from July 14, 1992 through August 17,1992, at the Susquehanna Steam Electric Station (SSES), Salem Township, Pennsylvania, The inspection covered plant operations, surveillance, and maintenance for both units. At the conclusion of the inspection, Mr. G. S. Barber. Senior Resident Inspector, summarized the inspection findings with Mr. H. G. Stanley and other members of your staff.
Though licensed activities were performed generally well in this period, we are concerned about the deficient understanding and communications among your staff that allowed a determination that the High Pressure Coolant Injection system was operable prior to the completion of a ASME code required visual inspection of the system upon the completion of maintenance activities. Accordingly, we are interested in your corrective actions and resolution of this matter.
