SUBJECT:
NRC INTEGRATED INSPECTION REPORT NOS. 50-280/96-10 AND 50-281/96-10 AND NOTICE OF VIOLATION
Dear Mr. O'Hanlon:
On September 28. 1996, the NRC completed an inspection at your Surry Unit 1 and 2 reactor facilities.
The enclosed report' presents the results of that inspection.
During the three-week period covered by this inspection aeriod, your conduct of activities at the Surry Power Station was generally claracterized by safety-conscious operations, sound engineering and maintenance practices, and careful radiological work controls. A violation was identified and is of concern to us because it involves a lack of preventive maintenance for the safety-related electrical motors required for repairs following an Appendix R type fire.
You need to ensure that appropriate storage and preventive maintenance are provided for other quality and safety related components.
- This violation is cited in the enclosed Notice of Violation (Notice), and the circumstances surrounding the violation are described in detail in the enclosed report.
Please note that you are required to respond to this letter and should follow the instructions specified in the enclosed Notice when preparing your response.
The NRC will use your response, in part, to determine whether further enforcement action is necessary to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
In accordance with 10 CFR 2.790 of the NRC's " Rules of Practice", a copy of this letter, its enclosures, and your response will be placed in the NRC Public Document Room (PDR).
