Date and Manner AEC Was Informed: Mr. J. E. Smith, Superintendent, Oconee Nuclear Station, advised the inspector of the problem by telecon on March 9,1972.

Description of Particular Event or Circumstances: Mr. Smith advised the ' inspector that sometime between 11:00 p.m. on March 8, 1972, and 8:00 a.m. on March 9, 1972, a fire of electrical origin occurred in the centrol rod drive system transfer panel.

A preliminary 1 valuation indicates the fire was caused by a loose connection on masonite-type panel. The fire burned a small section of the panel all vent out en its evn accord. An electrical connector was damaged by.he fire.

The control rod drive system test was being conducted en March 8, 1972.

At the conclusion of test activities at 11:00 p.m., one group of cen-trol rod drives were left in the out position. The core has not been loaded and the control rod drives are connected to du==y elements.

When test was restarted at 8:00 a.m. on March 9, 1972, one red dropped in.

Investigation revealed the damage caused by the fire.

Action by Licensee: The licensee's engineers and Diamond Power engineers are at the site to make-a full investigation and evaluation. Smith stated that the _.
