Background

On February 7, 2007, the NRC issued Generic Letter 2007-01, "Inaccessible or Underground Power Cable Failures That Disable Accident Mitigation Systems or Cause Plant Transients."

Carolina Power & Light Company (CP&L), now doing business as Progress Energy Carolinas, Inc., provided the Brunswick Steam Electric Plant (BSEP), Unit Nos. 1 and 2, response to Generic Letter 2007-01 on May 8, 2007. On November 7, 2007, the NRC provided a request for additional information, via electronic mail, regarding CP&L's responses to Generic Letter 2007-01.

NRC Question The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff has received your May 8, 2007, response to Generic Letter (GL) 2007-01, "Inaccessible or Underground Power Cable Failures that Disable Accident Mitigation Systems or Cause Plant Transients." The response to Question 1 of GL 2007-01 provided the cable failure history for Brunswick, stating that there were two failures of medium-voltage cables within the scope of Title 10 of the Code of FederalRegulations, Section 50.65, "Requirements for Monitoring the Effectiveness of Maintenance at Nuclear Power Plants" (Maintenance Rule), both on service to the motor~driven fire pump. Please provide the type of cable insulation and the nominal service voltage for these two failures.

CP&L Response The nominal service voltage of the cables associated with the two failures is rated at 4160 volts.

Additional information regarding these cables, including the cable insulation information, is provided below.
