No: II-17-005 February 28, 2017 CONTACT: Roger Hannah, 404-997-4417 Joey Ledford, 404-997-4416 NRC Names New Resident Inspector at Robinson Nuclear Plant Nuclear Regulatory Commission officials in Atlanta have selected Amy Beasten as the agencys resident inspector at Duke Energys Robinson nuclear power plant, located near Hartsville, S.C., about 26 miles northwest of Florence.

Amy Beasten joined the NRC in 2013 as a technical reviewer in the Office of New Reactors in Rockville, Md., where she assisted in the technical review of new nuclear reactor license applications. After completing her technical reviewer qualifications, she joined the Region II office in Atlanta as a project engineer in 2015.

Beasten received her Ph.D. in nuclear engineering from the University of Maryland. Her thesis research focused on the study of noble gas excimer scintillation for potential application in neutron detectors. While at the University of Maryland, she earned her senior reactor operator qualifications on the universitys research and test reactor. Beasten also holds a masters degree in nuclear engineering from the University of Maryland, and a bachelor of science degree in chemical engineering from Tulane University.

Amy Beastens academic training and dedication will help ensure the Robinson plant meets the stringent NRC regulations designed to protect the public and the environment, said NRC Region II Administrator Cathy Haney.

At least two NRC resident inspectors are assigned to each U.S. commercial nuclear plant.

They serve as the agency's eyes and ears at the facility, conducting inspections, monitoring major work projects and interacting with plant workers and the public. Resident inspectors can serve at one site for up to seven years.
