NRC NEWS U.S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION Office of Public Affairs, Region II 245 Peachtree Center Ave. NE, Suite 1200 Atlanta, GA 30303-1257 Web Site: www.nrc.gov No. II-10-071 November 1, 2010 CONTACT: Roger Hannah (404) 997-4417 E-mail: OPA2@nrc.gov Joey Ledford (404) 997-4416 NRC SCHEDULES MEETING IN ATLANTA TO DISCUSS ROBINSON NUCLEAR POWER PLANT The Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff has scheduled a public meeting in Atlanta for Monday, Nov. 8 to discuss the safety significance of inspection findings at the Robinson nuclear power plant, which is located near Hartsville, S.C., about 26 miles northwest of Florence. The plant is operated by Progress Energy.

The meeting is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. (EST) at the NRCs Region II office, 245 Peachtree Center Ave., NE, Suite 1200, in Atlanta.

The meeting is called a regulatory enforcement conference and the discussion will focus on the safety significance of a preliminary white inspection finding and second apparent violation being considered for potential escalated enforcement. The findings are associated with electrical problems with one of the plants emergency diesel generators. Emergency diesel generators at nuclear plants provide backup power to safely shut down the plant if the site were to lose all other sources of offsite power.

Members of the public may attend the meeting and NRC officials will be available to answer questions after the discussion.

Under the NRC reactor oversight process, inspection findings are evaluated using a significance determination process and assigned a color indicating the safety significance.

Findings with very low safety significance are labeled "green." "White" findings have low to moderate safety significance, "yellow" findings have substantial safety significance, and "red" findings have high safety significance. Inspection findings with higher safety significance than green prompt the NRC to increase oversight and inspection.

The meeting notice and the relevant NRC inspection report are available through the agencys electronic reading room at www.nrc.gov/reading-rm/adams.html. The documents can be accessed using the number ML102810633.
