Dear Sir or Madam:

I am writing on behalf of Boilermakers Local 5 and its members to express support for the license renewal of Units 2 and 3 at the Indian Point Energy Center, in Buchanan, New York It is my understanding that the NRC is considering numerous issues in connection with the application for license renewal of Indian Point Units 2 and 3, including the effect of relicensing on land values and environmental justice near the plants.Charles River & Associates found under most scenarios that shutting down Indian Point would lead to at least a 5 to 10 percent increase in electricity prices and would cause carbon emissions to increase by up to 15 percent and nitrous oxide emissions to increase by 7-8 percent in both the City and State. Studies and assessments from the New York Independent System Operator and Con Edison show that Indian Point provides at least 30 percent of New York City's power and is essential for both grid reliability and electricity price stability.

A separate report from the Westchester Businesses Alliance found that if Indian Point were to shut down, Westchester County could lose as many as eleven thousand jobs. My members and their families would be directly affected by those workforce reductions.

Many of my members are not only employed by Indian Point during outages, they also live near the plant with their families. They rely on the virtually emissions-free facility to keep the lights on and help reduce air pollution.

Indian Point is a strong supporter of organized labor and the building trades. By employing local boilermakers, Indian Point provides them with the opportunity to provide for their families, purchase homes, and invest in communities near the plant. The revenue from the sales, income, and property taxes they pay helps fund important services.

A shut down of Indian Point could force these same hard working union members to relocate from the Hudson Valley. Their departure would have a negative impact on land values and the communities in which they live. The benefits of Indian Point are well documented and its continued operation is essential for maintaining electric reliability, stabilizing energy prices, supporting public safety, and helping to improve our air quality. Indian Point's significant role in driving both population growth and ZONE 5
