Dear Mr. Balazik:

- SANTACRUZ IRVINE, CA 92697-2025 (949) 824-6649 or 824-6082 FAX: (949) 824-8571 email: gemiller@uci.edu April 29th 2016 The University of California Irvine hereby requests that license limits for our TRIGA Mark I nuclear reactor facility be established as follows: Up to 5.0 kilograms U-235 contained in the form of standard TRI GA fuel elements enriched to less than 20% Up to 25 grams ofU-235 in the form of fission detectors, fission plates, foils, chemical compounds, or solutions enriched to any enrichment. In addition we request that the license specify authorization for the following: Special nuclear material as may be produced by the operation of the facility, and Special nuclear material as may be received-in TRI GA fuel elements that are transferred to our license following utilization in other reactor -facilities, provided that the total amount not exceed that authorized as requested above. The basis for these requests, that represent a modest increase from our current license, is to stay well within sensible safety and security limits, but to allow for very modest expansion of our programs in fissionable materials research, especially related to nuclear security, and other reactor utilization over the next several years. The request also clarifies (relative to our current license) the various forms that the special nuclear material may take at this facility. I declare under penalty of perjury that the foregoing and the attached are true and correct to my knowledge. Ex(ited on L ':1,Q/vY-Dr. George E. Miller UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, IRVINE BERKELEY
