TELECONFERENCE WITH PURDUE UNIVERSITY (SNM-142)
On July 21,1999, representatives from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) Office of ,
Nuclear Material Safety and Safeguards, Division of Fuel Cycle Safety and Safeguards, Licensing and International Safeguards Branch (Dr. Sean Soong and Mr. Harry Felsher) spoke to a representative from Purdue University (Dr. James Shweitzer)in a teleconference regarding Purdue University's license renewal application dated May 4,1999. Dr. Shweitzer clarified parts of Section 9.1(b.)in the license renewal application and stated that:
e The steel storage cabinets, in the wire mesh cage in Physics Building Room B28, do not have any material stored in them, and e The converter, in the wire mesh cage as above, had been used in the Fast Breeder Blanket Facility (FBBF)in a safe configuration for both normal and abnormal conditions.
Because the converter had been taken out of the FBBF and split into two sections, the converter is in an inherently safer configuration than when it was in the FBBF.
