As aromised here is a little more information on the train de" ailment. I talced with Gordon Appel, the Deputy Director in ll. Gordon tcld me that the cars were transporting 11e.(2) byproduct material from the DOE FUSRAP site in <
Wayne. NJ to the Envirocare disposal site. They had been switched to a UP train in Chicago. ihe material was low concentration, the manifest had 2,12 pc1\gm of Th-232 with a total activity of .1 millicurries. Gordon thinks it may be more like 10-20 pci\gm. but that is just his hunch. Only one of the four hopper cars containing the material overturned. The other three just derailed. The material spilled into a depression, is well confined and not blowing. IL has two people on site. At present. UP and Envirocare are arguing about the responsibility for cleanup. Envirocare has a turnkey contract with DOE where Envirocare subcontracts the cleanup arranges transportation, and then disposes of the L.aterial in its facility.
