Facility: Allied-Signal Corporation Licensee Emergency Classification:

Metropolis Works Notification of an Unusual Event Metropolis, Illinois Alert Site Area Emergency License No. SUB-526 General Emergency X Not Applicable

Subject:

URANIUM OXIDE SPILL e)P-On February 6, 1988, the licensee reported that about 300 pounds of calciner uranium oxide (mixed oxide probably in the form of U308) spilled onto a concrete pad as a result of a seal leak from a calciner. The calciner is located outside the Feeds Material building. The spill apparently occurred while the plant was in a shutdown mode for the weekend. The calciner was in a low heat condition to prevent rapid cooldown of the contents.

B;cause of the granular nature and the density of the material, there was little potential for airborne dispersion. The material was cleaned up within 45 minutes of its discovery.

The State of Illinois will be notified.

The licensee notified the NRC Operations Center of the spill at 6:32 p.m., on February 6, 1988. This information is current as of 11 a.m., February 8,1988.
