NRC NEWS U.S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION Office of Public Affairs, Region II 245 Peachtree Center Ave., NE, Suite 1200 Atlanta, GA 30303-1257 Site: www.nrc.gov Blog: http://public-blog.nrc-gateway.gov No: II-11-046 August 17, 2011 CONTACT: Roger Hannah (404) 997-4417 E-mail: OPA2.Resource@nrc.gov Joey Ledford (404) 997-4416 NRC SCHEDULES MEETING IN HARTSVILLE TO DISCUSS ROBINSON NUCLEAR POWER PLANT The Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff has scheduled a regulatory performance meeting with Progress Energy on Thursday, Aug. 25, in Hartsville, S.C. to discuss corrective actions associated with a white performance indicator and three white inspection findings at the Robinson nuclear power plant located near Hartsville, about 26 miles northwest of Florence.

NRC and Progress Energy officials will discuss what the company has done to address the performance indicator for unplanned shutdowns, which crossed the threshold for white in the third quarter of 2010. The discussion will also cover corrective actions for issues related to an emergency diesel generator breaker, operator training objectives and the failure to implement some procedures during a plant shutdown in March 2010.

The NRC evaluates regulatory performance at commercial nuclear power plants with a color-coded system which classifies findings as green, white, yellow or red, in increasing order of safety significance. The NRC staff increases its level of oversight and inspection based on that significance and expects the plants operator to take appropriate corrective actions to address the causes and any underlying issues.

The NRC staff completed two inspections of the identified issues and corrective actions at the Robinson plant earlier this year and determined that the companys corrective actions were appropriate.

The meeting is scheduled for 2 p.m. EDT in the Hartsville Public Library, 147 W. College Avenue in Hartsville. The meeting is open to the public and those attending will have an opportunity to talk with NRC officials after the business portion of the meeting. Persons wishing to participate in this meeting by toll-free audio teleconference should contact the NRCs Randy Musser at 404-997-4603 or Randy Musser prior to the day of the meeting.
