This letter responds to your letter of November 25, 1980, requesting a list of threatened and endangered species that may occur in the vicinity of the Callaway Nuclear Power Plant ar. i two transmission corridors, Callaway, hiontgomery, Osaga, and Gasconade Counties, Siissouri.

To facilitate compliance wi*h Section 7(c) of the Endangered Species Act of 1973, as amended, Federal agencies are required to obtain from the Fish and Wildlife Service information concerning any species, listed or proposed to be listed, which may be present in the area of the proposed action. Therefore, we are furnishing you the following list of species, on a county by county basis, which may be present in the concerned area.

Callaway County - Bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus)

Osage County - Bald eagle Pink mucket pearly mussel (Lampsilis orbiculata orbiculata)

Gasconade County - Bald eagle Peregrine falcon (Fclco peregrinus)

Pink mucket pearly mussel Our concern for bald eagles deals primarily with wintering birds. Wintering eagles are encountered along river systems,-laves and reservoirs where open water exists year around. These open water areas provide the food source for wintering eagles with fish and crippled waterfowl constituting the bulk of their diet.

The bald eagle has been sighted along the hilssouri River in Callaway and Gasconade Counties and the Osage River in Osage County. These sightings were made during the blidwintc;* Eagle Survey conducted in January 1980.

The gray bat can be found in one cave in Osage County. The cave is located in the southeast part of the county along the Gascunade River. The seasonal use and numbers are not documented at this time.

The pink mucket pearly mussel has been collected f. mn two locations in the Osage River, Osage County, and from the Gasconade River, Gasconade County. The Gasconade River collections were made by Dr. Stansbery, Ohio State University.

o Section 7(c) of the Act amendments requires that you prepare a biological assessment to

' determine if the proposed project "may affect or will not affect" the above species. If you determine that the project "may affect" these species, you should initiate formal consultation.
