NRC STAFF TO MEET WITH OMAHA PUBLIC POWER DISTRICT OFFICIALS TO

DISCUSS FORT CALHOUN NUCLEAR PLANT

U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff will meet with officials from the Omaha

Public Power District (OPPD) in Omaha, Neb., on Jan. 19, to discuss the process it will use to

maintain oversight of the Fort Calhoun nuclear plant. OPPD operates the plant, located 19 miles

north of Omaha.

The meeting, which is open to public observation, will begin at 6 p.m. at the Doubletree

Hotel, 1616 Dodge St.

Fort Calhoun is shut down and remains in a safe mode following flooding last spring

along the Missouri River.

Conferees will discuss specifics of the process the NRC will use to monitor the plant and

maintain inspection oversight during post-flooding recovery actions. The licensee was notified

via letter on Dec. 13, of this transition from the normal oversight process designed for operating

reactors to a program tailored for plants that have been shut down for a prolonged period and

have performance issues that must be resolved prior to restart.

The letter is available through ADAMS by going to http://wba.nrc.gov:8080/ves// and

doing a Simple Search for ML113470721.

Members of the NRC staff will be available to answer questions from the public after the

business portion of the meeting.
