Farley Nuclear Plant Unit 2 Response to Confirmatory Action Letter Reqardinn Pressurizer Nozzle Allov 8211 82 Butt Welds Ladies and Gentlemen:

On March 12,2007, Southern Nuclear Operating Company (SNC) received NRC Confirmatory Action Letter (CAL) No. NRR-07-018 regarding commitments made by SNC letter dated March 6, 2007, associated with the Alloy 8211 82 butt welds in the pressurizer at Farley Nuclear Plant (FNP) Units 1 and 2. The SNC letter described actions that would be taken by FNP for the pressurizer dissimilar metal butt welds containing Alloy 821182 material.

These commitments addressed: 1) completion schedules for inspectionlmitigation of the welds; 2) RCS leak monitoring frequency, action levels, and actions; 3) reporting requirements; and

4) reinspection frequencies.

During the Spring 2007 Unit 2 outage 2R18, all six pressurizer dissimilar metal butt welds containing Alloy 821182 material were examined to meet MRP-139 volumetric examination requirements. Five of these welds were examined with no recordable indications noted. Bare metal visual (BMV) examinations were not performed during the 2R18 outage based on the MRP-139 requirement that a BMV is not required in an outage when a volumetric examination is performed.

The remaining dissimilar metal butt weld associated with the surge nozzle had ultrasonic indications which necessitated the application of a full structural weld overlay (FSWOL). On May 9, 2007, SNC submitted a letter to the NRC providing examination results for the surge nozzle FSWOL and a discussion of repairs to the overlay material andlor base metal.

The May 9, 2007 submittal and this letter satisfy the 60-day reporting requirements committed to by SNC letter dated March 6, 2007.
