MICHIGAN -AGRICULTURE, NUTRITION, AND FORESTRY BUDGET ENERGY AND NATURAL RESOURCES'Unied ýtatc 16cateFINANCE 133 HART SENATE OFFICE BUILDING WASHINGTON, DC 20510-2204 May 17, 2012 The Honorable Gregory Jaczko, Chairman The Honorable Kristine Svinicki, Commissioner The Honorable George Apostolakis, Commissioner The Honorable William Magwood, Commissioner The Honorable William Ostendorff, Commissioner United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission Mail Stop O- 16G4 Washington, DC 20555 Dear Chairman Jaczko and Honorable Commissioners, I am writing to express concerns regarding the Palisades nuclear power plant located in Covert, Michigan and related Nuclear Regulatory Commission actions. As you know, on September 25, 2011, the Palisades Nuclear Power Plant was shut down for a week due to electrical errors. There was also a component coupling failure at the plant in August 2011 and a water pump failure in May 2011. Due to continuing issues, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission has downgraded this plant to the "Regulatory Response Column" with the possibility of being downgraded further to the "Degraded Cornerstone Column." The safety of the Palisades plant is of the utmost importance to me and the residents of Michigan.

Palisades is an important job creator, providing more than 650 jobs in the area, and it must be capable of operating safely and effectively to continue powering Michigan businesses and homes. In the wake of multiple shutdowns and equipment issues, I am very concerned about the impact of these safety issues on the community and our state. Therefore, I respectfully request a detailed report of all the actions taken by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to address the recent safety issues at the Palisades plant, as well as a detailed report of the history of incidents at Palisades that led to the downgrading of the plant's safety status.Sincerely, United States Senator PRINTED ON RECYCLED PAPER
