use.TheSchottfacilitywasusedformanufacturingspecialopticalglass.SomeoftheglassmanufacturedbySchott containedthorium,anaturally-occurringradioactivematerial.

Thecontaminationatthesitewastheresultofthedisposalof smallpiecesoftheglasscontainingthorium,alongwithsoiland othernon-radioactiveglassfragments,inacompanylandfillfrom 1969through1980.DecommissioningworkbeganinAugust1996,twomonthsafterNRChadapprovedSchott'splan.Finalcleanupwascompletedin May1998.Basedonitsreviewandconfirmatorysurveys,theNRC hasdeterminedthatremediationofresidualradioactive contaminationhasbeensuccessfullycompletedandthatthesite meetsNRCcriteriaforunrestricteduse.
