Statement for hearing on Indian Point To Whom It May Concern; I would like for my voice to be included among the people who would sigh a lifetime of relief if the Indian Point nuclear power plant would be laid to rest. The majority of my life has been lived within 30 miles of Indian Point. I can remember as a child, being woken up by occasional earthquakes. After the shaking stopped, I would sit up in bed, terrified, waiting to see if it was over or if the quake had consequences at the power plant. To this day I have to respect that these fears were well founded.
As a teenager in high school, I protested many times with thousands of others against the potential dangers of nuclear power and for further support of renewable energy. If only we had actually invested in renewable sources with more significance back then. Thirty years later, we would already have lessened our reliance on foreign energy, and our energy sources would be environmentally safe, preserving the sanctity of the environment for the future.
Indian Point is an outdated and unsafe facility. We do not need the energy it provides. Please do not renew its license. Let children in the neighboring area live without the fear I had. Protect us from unnecessary environmental damage. Our safety, and the safety of our water, is more important than an energy company's profits.
Thank you for listening.
