Items of Interest Week Ending JUNE 26, 2020 Staff Approved Topical Report Supplement Regarding RadICS Digital System On June 23, 2020, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff approved the Research and Production Corporation Radics (Radics LLC) topical report supplement to its topical report, 2016-RPC003-TR-001, RadlCS Topical Report (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) Accession No. ML20166A000). The RadICS platform is a digital system which can be configured to produce protection and safety system applications for power reactors.
Staff Hosted Public Meeting Regarding Emergency Preparedness Biennial Exercise On June 23, 2020, the NRC staff hosted a public meeting to discuss with potentially affected stakeholders possible emergency preparedness biennial exercise exemptions due to impacts from the COVID-19 public health emergency (ADAMS Accession No. ML20174A468). The staffs presentation can be found in ADAMS Accession No. ML20174A283.
Staff Hosted Public Meeting Regarding New Online Submission Form for Requests to Use Alternatives On June 25, 2020, the NRC staff held a public meeting to introduce a new online submission form for licensees under Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations (10 CFR) Part 50 to submit requests to use alternatives under 10 CFR Part 50.55a(z), "Alternatives to Codes and Standards Requirements" (ADAMS Accession No. ML20170B200). The online submission form is available on the NRC public website at https://www.nrc.gov/about-nrc/covid-19/reactors/codes-standards.html.
Staff Hosted the 7th Public Workshop on Vendor Oversight On June 23, through June 25, 2020, the NRC staff hosted the 7th Public Workshop on Vendor Oversight to bring together NRC staff, regulated utilities, vendors of nuclear components, and other interested stakeholders to discuss vendor oversight issues (ADAMS Accession No. ML20133J912). Topics discussed at the workshop included guidance for 10 CFR Part 21, Reporting Of Defects And Noncompliance; international vendor inspections; compliance with 10 CFR Part 50, Appendix B, Quality Assurance Criteria for Nuclear Power Plants and Fuel Reprocessing Plants, through the use of codes and quality standards; commercial-grade dedication; and controlling a commercial item under an Appendix B program among others.
The virtual workshop had almost 500 participants from 15 countries.
Staff Approved Licensing Requests for Regulatory Relief Related to the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency The NRC staff reviewed and approved several licensing requests seeking temporary flexibilities to maintain the safe and secure operation of the U.S. nuclear fleet during the pandemic.
