No: III-15-011 April 24, 2015 CONTACT: Viktoria Mitlyng 630-829-9662 Prema Chandrathil 630-829-9663 NRC Schedules Open House Apr. 29 to Discuss Performance of LaSalle Nuclear Station The Nuclear Regulatory Commission officials will hold an open house Apr. 29 to discuss the agencys assessment of the LaSalle County Stations performance during 2014. The plant is located in Marseilles, Ill., about 11 miles southeast of Ottawa, and is operated by Exelon Generation Co., LLC.

The open house will be held for 4:30 to 6 p.m. at the Brookfield Township Hall, 2099 E. 27th Rd., in Brookfield Township. The NRC staff will be available for informal one-on-one discussions about the performance of the LaSalle plant and other topics related to the NRCs regulatory activities.

We host open houses, which are informal meetings between the NRC staff and the public, to have an open dialogue with local residents about the plant and other NRC-related issues of interest to the public, said NRC Region III Administrator Cynthia D. Pederson. It is a great opportunity for people to meet our resident inspectors and other staff; and a great opportunity for us to speak with people who live near the plant.

The NRC concluded that, overall, LaSalle Units 1 and 2 operated safely.

For the first three quarters of 2014, LaSalle Unit 2 had a white finding for the failure to adhere to procedures while working on a condenser which resulted in a complicated reactor scram. As a result, the plant received increased NRC oversight. After conducting a follow-up inspection, the NRC concluded that LaSalle Unit 2 has resolved the issue and could return to standard NRC oversight as of the 3rd quarter of 2014. Unit 1 was under standard NRC oversight during the entire year.

The NRC uses color-coded inspection findings and performance indicators to assess nuclear plant performance. The colors start with green and then move to white, yellow, or red, commensurate with the safety significance of the issues involved. Performance indicators are statistical measurements of plant and equipment performance.

This year, LaSalle Units 1 and 2 will continue to receive the detailed routine inspections conducted at all nuclear power plants. Routine inspections are performed by two NRC Resident Inspectors assigned to the plant and by inspection specialists from the Region III Office in Lisle, Ill.,

and the agencys headquarters in Rockville, Md.

The NRCs 2014 assessment letter and current performance information for Unit 1 and Unit 2 is available on the NRC website.
