No: II-14-016 April 3, 2014 CONTACT: Roger Hannah 404-997-4417 Joey Ledford 404-997-4416 NRC Schedules Open House April 15 to Discuss Agencys Assessment of Farley Nuclear Power Plant The Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff has scheduled an open house for April 15 to talk to people in the community about the agencys assessment of the Farley nuclear power plant during 2013. The plant, operated by Southern Nuclear Operating Co., is located near Columbia, Ala., about 18 miles east of Dothan.

The open house is scheduled to run from 3-5 p.m. at the Alabama Midland Railroad Depot, 312 Midland Street in Ashford, Ala.

NRC staff members will be available to answer questions on the performance of the Farley plant, as well as the overall NRC role in ensuring safe plant operations.

Our resident and region-based inspectors spend many hours monitoring plant activities to ensure that the plant operates safely, said NRC Region II Administrator Victor McCree. We hold these meetings every year to make our staff available to people who live close to the plant and answer questions about our oversight.

A letter sent from the NRC Region II office to plant officials addresses the performance of both Farley units during 2013.

During 2013, the NRC found that both Farley units operated in a manner that preserved public health and safety and met all NRC objectives. The NRC issued a violation related to the plants emergency plan. That issue stems from a calculation error in the radiological values which would be used to declare emergency levels. The issue was identified by Southern Nuclear and found by the NRC to have low to moderate safety significance. The company has corrected the error in the emergency plan. However, it will result in an additional NRC inspection this year. Otherwise, the plant will receive the NRCs normal detailed inspections in 2014.
