NRC NEWS UNITED STATES NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION OFFICE OF PUBLIC AFFAIRS, REGION II 61 Forsyth Street SW, Atlanta GA 30303 Web Site: www.nrc.gov No. II-05-031 July 7, 2005 CONTACT: Ken Clark (404)562-4416 E-mail: OPA2@nrc.gov Roger Hannah (404)562-4417 NRC STAFF TO MEET WITH TVA OFFICIALS IN ATLANTA TO DISCUSS BROWNS FERRY UNIT 1 RESTART Nuclear Regulatory Commission officials will meet with Tennessee Valley Authority officials at 1:30 p.m. (EDT) on Wednesday, July 20 to discuss the status of TVAs restart efforts for the Unit 1 reactor at the Browns Ferry nuclear plant in Alabama.

The meeting, which is open to the public, will be held at the NRCs Region II office, located on th the 24 floor of the Sam Nunn Atlanta Federal Center, 61 Forsyth Street, Atlanta. NRC officials will be available after the business portion of the meeting to answer questions from interested observers.

The agenda for the meeting will cover completed work activities, schedules for future milestones, challenges and other activities important to NRC oversight and inspection of Unit 1.

All three units of the Browns Ferry plant were shut down in 1985 but retained NRC operating licenses. Unit 2 was restarted in 1991 and Unit 3 was restarted in 1995. TVA has been doing extensive work on Unit 1 and said it expects to have that unit ready to begin operating again by 2007.
