Roger Hannah, 404-997-4417 Joey Ledford, 404-997-4416 NRC Names New Resident Inspector at Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant Nuclear Regulatory Commission officials in Atlanta have named Matt Kirk as one of the agencys resident inspectors at the Browns Ferry nuclear power plant, located near Athens, Ala., about 32 miles west of Huntsville.

Kirk joined the NRC in 2015 as a project engineer in the NRC Region IV office in Arlington, Texas. He also served as acting resident inspector at the Arkansas Nuclear One nuclear plant.

Before joining the agency, he was a shift test engineer at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, Wash., for more than four years. While at the shipyard, he supported overhauls on Nimitz-class aircraft carriers.

Kirk received a mechanical engineering degree from Auburn University.

Matt Kirks experience and strong commitment to safety will help ensure that the Browns Ferry plant operates safely under NRC regulatory requirements, said NRC Region II Administrator Cathy Haney.

At least two NRC resident inspectors are assigned to each U.S. commercial nuclear plant. They serve as the agency's eyes and ears at the facility, conducting inspections, monitoring major work projects and interacting with plant workers and the public. Resident inspectors can serve at one site for up to seven years.

Matt Kirk joins Senior Resident Inspector Dave Dumbacher, who has been at the Browns Ferry nuclear plant since 2012, and Resident Inspector Adam Ruh, who has been assigned to Browns Ferry since 2014. The NRC resident inspectors at the Browns Ferry site can be reached at 256-729-6196.
