NRC NEWS U.S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION Office of Public Affairs, Region II 245 Peachtree Center Ave., NE, Suite 1200 Atlanta, GA 30303-1257 Site: www.nrc.gov Blog: http://public-blog.nrc-gateway.gov No: II-13-006 February 13, 2013 CONTACT: Roger Hannah (404) 997-4417 E-mail: OPA2.Resource@nrc.gov Joey Ledford (404) 997-4416 NRC NAMES NEW RESIDENT INSPECTOR AT BROWNS FERRY NUCLEAR POWER PLANT Nuclear Regulatory Commission officials in Atlanta have selected Tom Stephen as a resident inspector for the Tennessee Valley Authoritys Browns Ferry nuclear power plant, located near Athens, Ala., about 32 miles west of Huntsville. Stephen joins NRC Senior Resident Inspector David Dumbacher and NRC Resident Inspector Lundy Pressley.

Before being assigned to the Browns Ferry site, Stephen had served since January 2012 in the Resident Inspector Development Program in the Region II office in Atlanta. Before that assignment, Stephen had served 20 years on active duty in the U.S. Navy. He spent five years as an enlisted nuclear trained mechanic and 15 years as a submarine officer.

Stephen received a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Auburn University in Auburn, Ala. He also received a Masters of Engineering Management degree from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va.

Tom Stephen has the skill and dedication to carry out the NRC mission of protecting people and the environment by helping to ensure the safety of the Browns Ferry plant, said NRC Region II Administrator Victor McCree.

At least two NRC resident inspectors are assigned to each operating U.S. commercial nuclear plant. They serve as the agency's eyes and ears at the facility, conducting inspections, monitoring major work projects and interacting with plant workers and the public. Resident inspectors can serve at a reactor site for up to seven years.

The Browns Ferry resident inspectors can be reached at 256-729-6196.
