NRC NEWS UNITED STATES NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION OFFICE OF PUBLIC AFFAIRS, REGION II 61 Forsyth Street SW, Atlanta GA 30303 Web Site: www.nrc.gov No. II-03-021 March 28, 2003 CONTACT: Ken Clark (404)562-4416 E-mail: OPA2@nrc.gov Roger Hannah (404)562-4417 NRC TO MEET WITH TVA OFFICIALS TO DISCUSS SAFETY PERFORMANCE AT BROWNS FERRY NUCLEAR POWER PLANT The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff will meet with Tennessee Valley Authority officials on Thursday, April 3, to discuss the results of NRCs annual assessment of safety performance at the Browns Ferry nuclear power plant near Athens, Alabama.

The meeting will be held at 3:00 p.m. (CST) at the Browns Ferry Training Center at the plant site. The public is invited to observe the meeting, and NRC officials will be available before the conclusion of the meeting to answer any questions.

A letter from the NRC to TVA addresses plant safety performance during the previous year and forms the basis for the meeting discussions. The letter states that, overall, Browns Ferry operated in a manner that preserved public health and safety and that plant performance was at a level requiring no additional NRC inspection beyond the normal baseline activities. The letter, which is available from Region II Public Affairs and on the NRC web site at www.nrc.gov/NRR/OVERSIGHT/ASSESS/LETTERS/bf_2002q4.pdf , says the NRC staff will also conduct inspections of the plants implementation of NRC security advisories and Orders, inspections of construction activities for the plants Independent Spent Fuel Storage Installation, and inspections of the Unit 1 recovery project activities.

Current performance indicators for the two operating units at the Browns Ferry plant are available at www.nrc.gov/NRR/OVERSIGHT/ASSESS/BF2/bf2_chart.html and www.nrc.gov/NRR/OVERSIGHT/ASSESS/BF3/bf3_chart.html
