Diane Screnci, 610-337-5330 Neil Sheehan, 610-337-5331 NRC to Conduct Public Meeting to Discuss 2016 Performance of Ginna Nuclear Power Plant Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff will be available to discuss the 2016 safety performance of the Ginna nuclear power plant, which is operated by Exelon, during a public open house planned for April 19 in Ontario, N.Y.

The open house will run from 4-6 p.m. at Ontario Town Hall, 1850 Ridge Road. On hand to discuss the plants performance and the NRCs oversight of the facility will be agency employees responsible for inspections of the plant, including the resident inspectors based at the site on a full-time basis.

Overall, Ginna operated safely during 2016. As of the end of last year, the plant had no performance indicators outside the normal band. However, a white (low to moderate safety significance) inspection finding issued last September that involved the plants emergency plan remained open at the end of 2016. A supplemental team inspection conducted in October and documented in a report issued in November concluded Exelon had appropriately addressed the issue, but the finding was not officially closed out until April 1, 2017.

As a result of the closure of the white finding, Ginna has returned to the NRCs normal, or baseline, level of oversight, NRC Region I Administrator Dan Dorman said. Nevertheless, the plant will still undergo a regimen of inspections totaling thousands of hours and covering such areas of performance as radiological safety, emergency planning and whether certain safety components are functioning as designed.

Under the NRCs Reactor Oversight Process, the agency gauges plant performance through the use of color-coded inspection findings and performance indicators, which are statistical measurements of plant performance that can trigger additional oversight if exceeded. Any inspection findings or performance indicators that are greater than green (very low safety significance) trigger increased NRC oversight.

Day-to-day inspections are performed by two resident inspectors assigned to the plant. Reviews are also carried out at the sites by specialist inspectors assigned to the agencys Region I Office in King of Prussia, Pa.
