Facility Licensee Emergency Classification Prairie Island Nuclear Plant __ Notification of Unusual Event Northern States Power Co. Alert Welch, MN Site Area Emergency Docket: 50-282 General Emergency License: DPR-42 X Not Applicable
SUBJECT:
PRAIRIE ISLAND UNIT 2 SHUTDOWN DUE TO TRIP OF MAIN POWER TURBINE On June 7, 2015 at 7:35 a.m. CST, Unit 2 of the Prairie Island Nuclear Plant automatically tripped following an unexpected, automatic trip of the main power turbine. The NRC resident inspectors responded to the shutdown. Plant equipment operated as designed in response to the trip. The main power turbine trip was due to problems with the turbine lubricating oil system.
The main power turbine is used to produce electrical power using heated steam from the reactor. The reactor automatically shuts down if the main power turbine is out of service.
The licensee has commenced repairs on the lubricating oil system. The resident inspectors are evaluating the licensees actions.
This preliminary notification is issued for information only and no further action by the staff is anticipated. State officials have been informed.
The information presented herein has been discussed with the licensee, and is current as of 12:45 pm CST, on June 9, 2015.
