safety or public. interest significance. The information is as initially l received without verification or evaluation, and is basically all that is known by Region II staff in Atlanta, Georgia on this date.

EXTENDED SHUTDOWN TO MEET CONFIRMATORY ACTION LETTER Oconee Unit 1 is scheduled to be shutdown by early evening on June 13, 1997, to conduct non-destructive test examinations of high pressure injection (HPI) lines / nozzles and implement letdown storage tank j

l level / pressure modifications similar to those recently performed in the l other two Oconee Units as a result of the Unit 2 HPI line/ nozzle weld crack (PNO-II-97-26) and Unit 3 HPI system degradation (PNO-II-97-023).

l As. encompassed in the May 22, 1997, update to associated Confirmatory j

i Action Letter 2-97-003, the licensee committed to shutdown Unit i no

later than June 14 and implement compensatory actions in the interim with l

respect to the above issues, as well as HPI pump minimum recirculation L flow orifice degradation.

Accordingly, during this estimated two week outage, HPI pump minimum recirculation flow orifice blocks will also be replaced.

The NRC resident inspectors will followup on the Unit 1 shutdown and associated recovery activities.

The licensee is prepared j to respond to any media inquiries, but no press release is planned.
