SUBJECT:

LOW LEVEL CONTAMINATION OF WASTEOIL VENDOR TANK TRUCK AND HOLDING TANK On June 20, two of three 55 gallon barrels containing approximately 20 gallons each of contaminated waste oil were inadvertently mixed with approximately 2000 gallons of uncontaminated waste oil. The mixture was shipped offsite using the truck of a waste oil vendor from Greer, South Carolina.

The oil was then trans ferred to the vendor's storage tank. The vendor subsequently placed another 2000 gallons of waste oil, from another customer, into the contaminated truck.

The licensee has contacted the waste oil vendor, who is returning the 4000 gallons of oil to Oconee for onsite storage.

The licensee plans to decontaminate the vendor's equipment as necessary. The resident inspector is following these activities, and is reviewing the details of the event.

The activity in the tank at the waste yard is:

Mn-54 : 5.4E-8 microcuries per cubic centimeter Co-60 :2.6E-7 microcuries per cubic centimeter Cs-134: 5.6E-6 microcuries per cubic centimeter Cs-137: 1.1E-5 microcuries per cubic centimeter Note:

If this were water, it would be approximately 20% over the 10CFR20 concentration for release to unrestricted areas.

The activity of the oil presently in the truck is:

Cs-134: 2.7E-7 microcuries per cubic centimeter Cs-137: 5.9E-7 microcuries per cubic centimeter The licensee plans a news release. The NRC does not plan a press release. The State of South Carolina has been notified.

Region II (Atlanta) received notification of this occurrence by telephone from the Resident Inspector at 4:50 p.m. on June 24.
