APPROVAL OF PURDUE UNIVERSITY APPLICATION FOR RENEWAL OF SPECIAL NUCLEAR MATERIALS LICENSE NUMBER 142 - ENTERPRISE PROJECT IDENTIFICATION NUMBER L-2023-NFR-0000
Dear Mr. Young:
This letter is in response to your submittal, with enclosures, dated September 18, 2023 (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System [ADAMS] Accession No. ML23268A087), requesting the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commissions (NRCs) renewal of special nuclear materials license number 142 (SNM-142), which authorizes the Purdue University (Purdue), to possess and use special nuclear material, for a period of 10 years. The license renewal application (LRA) was submitted pursuant to the requirements in Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations (10 CFR) Part 70.
The NRC staff has completed its review of your submittal and the responses to the RAIs. Based on its review of the information provided, the NRC staff found that Purdues program under SNM-142 will provide adequate protection of public health and safety and that the LRA, and supplemental information, meets the requirements of 10 CFR Section 70.23, Requirements for the approval of applications. Pursuant to the requirements in 10 CFR Part 70, the NRC is renewing the SNM-142 for a 10-year term, expiring on September 25, 2033.
Enclosed please find the public version of the NRC staffs safety evaluation report (SER)
(Enclosure 1), the public version of the renewed SNM-142 (Enclosure 2), the non-public SER (Enclosure 3), and non-public version of the renewed SNM-142 (Enclosure 4).
In accordance with 10 CFR 2.390, Public inspections, exemptions, requests for withholding, a copy of this letter will be available electronically for public inspection in the NRC Public Document Room (PDR) or from the Publicly Available Records component of the NRCs ADAMS.
