3 Purpose of Meeting

  • To present TN Americas proposed methodology for performing structural, thermal, shielding, and criticality analysis for BWR fuel assemblies loaded into the newly designed NUHOMS 61BTH Type 3 DSC.
  • Briefly discuss other scope items.
  • Provide an opportunity to receive NRC feedback and facilitate planning prior to submittal of Amendment No. 19 to CoC 1004.
  • Achieve clear, common understanding of the path forward for Amendment No. 19 regarding scope and schedule.

4 Primary Scope Develop a new basket for the NUHOMS 61BTH (Type 3) which will satisfy all requirements for the NUHOMS 61BTH system as specified in the Technical Specifications (TS) for CoC 1004. These requirements include but are not limited to the following items:

  • A new bounding HLZC for the Type 3 that will allow a maximum head load up to 33.6 kW enveloping all previous HLZCs for the Type 2
  • Capability of loading up to 4 damaged and/or failed fuel assemblies per DSC
  • Maximum burnup of 62 GWd/MTU and maximum initial enrichment of 5.0 wt%

5 Primary Scope The new NUHOMS 61BTH Type 3 basket implements the EOS-style design [

  • This is the same basket style that was used for the NUHOMS EOS-37PTH and EOS-89BTH (CoC 1042) as well as the NUHOMS 24PTH Type 3 (Amendment 18 of CoC 1004). [

  • The Type 3 DSC shell will be based on the existing Type 2 DSC shell with only minor modifications in order to accommodate the new Type 3 basket. All major dimensions including length and diameter will remain unchanged.

7 Structural Summary Methodology Structural evaluation is based on the approved methodologies for NUHOMS 24PTH Type 3 DSC basket from CoC 1004 Amendment 18 as well as for NUHOMS EOS-37PTH and EOS-89BTH from CoC 1042

9 Thermal Summary TN Americas CoC Amd 19 Pre-Application Meeting The 61BTH Type 3 basket design includes various features to improve the thermal performance such as:

Thermal performance of the 61BTH Type 3 basket assembly is evaluated under the storage and transfer conditions HLZC#14 (33.6kW) is the bounding heat load configuration for thermal evaluation due to its FA storage arrangement and heat load Bounding storage condition is the normal storage condition in HSM-H with wind Bounding transfer condition is the off-normal transfer condition in OS197 TC

10 TN Americas CoC Amd 19 Pre-Application Meeting Thermal Summary Methodology Storage evaluation, as well as transfer evaluation, are based on reviewed and accepted models and analyses for 24PTH DSC in HSM-H and OS197, respectively, from CoC 1004 Amendment 18 Coupled DSC/HSM-H and DSC/TC models in ANSYS Fluent Grid convergence index (GCI) study has been provided Thermal Results (preliminary)

11 TN Americas CoC Amd 19 Pre-Application Meeting Shielding Summary The shielding HLZC, UFSAR Table T.5-1a, introduced in Amendment 17 bounds all the 13 HLZCs and new HLZC 14 for 61BTH DSCs therefore no further shielding analysis is performed HLZC 14 - 0.48 kW Zone1 and 0.6 kW Zone 2 UFSAR Table T.5-1a

15 Other Scope Items Add an ASME code alternative for NB/NG-4323 to Technical Specifications Table C-12 for welder qualification.

The alternative will state that in lieu of this requirement, a full UT evaluation of the joint may be performed to ensure adequacy of the weld.
