On June 6, 2024, a Closed meeting was held between the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and representatives of Southern Nuclear Operating Company, Inc. (SNC, the licensee).

The purpose of the meeting was to discuss security-related information regarding the physical barrier exemptions for Joseph M. Farley Nuclear Plant (Farley), Units 1 and 2, Edwin I. Hatch Nuclear Plant (Hatch), Units 1 and 2, and Vogtle Electric Generating Plant (Vogtle), Units 1, 2, 3, and 4.

On May 21, 2024 (Agencywide Documents and Access Management System (ADAMS)

Accession No. ML24142A223), the meeting was noticed on the NRC public webpage.

By letter dated July 7, 2023, (ML23188A163) as supplemented by letters dated February 5, 12, and April 4, 2024, (ML24036A292, ML24043A186, and ML24095A348), SNC submitted exemptions from specific requirements of Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations (10 CFR),

Part 73, Section 73.2, Definitions for the Farley, Units 1 and 2, and Hatch, Units 1 and 2, and Vogtle, Units 1, 2, 3, and 4. The regulation at 10 CFR 73.2 requires, in part, that fences for a physical barrier be topped by three or more strands of barbed wire or similar material on brackets angled inward or outward between 30 and 45 degrees from the vertical.

The NRC staff opened the meeting with introductory remarks and a roll call of the attendees.

The NRC staff and SNC discussed security-related information and documented key points in a non-public conversation record (ML24157A030).

The meeting adjourned at 10:36 am Eastern Time (ET).
