Change in Estimated Review Schedule for MRP-227, Revision 2, Pressurized Water Reactor Internals Inspection and Evaluations Guideline (EPID: L-2022-TOP-0029)

Brad Adams, Chairman, PMMP EC, Southern Nuclear Robert O. McGill, MRP Program Manager, Electric Power Research Institute Palo Alto Office 3420 Hillview Avenue Palo Alto, CA 94304-1338 Brad Adams and Robert McGill, By letter dated May 9, 2022, the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) submitted technical report Materials Reliability Program: Pressurized Water Reactor Internals Inspection and Evaluation Guidelines (MRP-227, Revision 2) to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff for review and approval (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System Package Accession No. ML21301A194). The staff reviewed and accepted the technical report on June 17, 2022 (ADAMS Accession No. ML22145A401).

By letter dated April 4, 2024 (ADAMS Accession No. ML24095A274), EPRI submitted industry responses to the NRC staffs request for additional information (RAI) related to MRP-227, Revision 2, entitled Materials Reliability Program: Pressurized Water Reactor Internals Inspection and Evaluations Guideline. In the submittal letter, EPRI informed the NRC that the RAIs related to Babcock and Wilcox (B&W)-designed units will be submitted separately by May 31, 2024.

As a result of the new due date for the last RAIs, the NRC staff needs to revise the overall review schedule for MRP-227, Revision 2. The NRC staff now expects to complete its review and issue a draft safety evaluation for proprietary review by September 30, 2024.

This schedule estimate could change due to several factors such as unanticipated additional review scope. If there are emergent complexities or challenges in our review that would result in a change to the estimated completion date, the reasons for the change, and a revised estimate will be communicated during routine interactions with the assigned project manager.

The change in the estimated date for issuing the draft safety evaluation was discussed with and approved by the Deputy Director for the Division of Operating Reactor Licensing.
