Norma,

I hope your day is going well. Please see the below response to the question provided this morning.

Unlike the cast lead in the container sidewall where visual examination of shielding efficacy is impossible, installation of the lead plates and rings in the containers base and lid allow for visual examination to verify that gaps are filled. As stated, the lead plates/rings are either press-fit into place or lead wool is installed (i.e., pounded) into radial gaps to eliminate such gaps, should they be present. Visual examination is performed to verify that radial gaps are either not present or have been properly filled prior to installation of the associated cover plates.

Please let me know if you need anything else.

Thanks, Scott Scott Burns Packaging Engineer Cell: (575) 706-7920 Office: (575) 234-7091 Nuclear Waste Partnership LLC l Contractor for the U.S. Department of Energy 4021 National Parks Highway l PO Box 2078 l Mail Stop GSA-211 Carlsbad NM 88220

Shielded Container Lid and Bases Lead Question

Norma,

Below is the question Id like you to send to the applicant. Let me know if you have any questions.

Chris

The shielded container drawings identify that the lead in the lids and bases is press-fit with the option of using lead wool to establish a tight fit. Either explain how the absence of gaps, seams, etc.

in the lead shielding of the shielded container lids and bases is confirmed, or provide justification for not performing a volumetric test for the lead shielding in the lid and base of the shielded container similar to that performed for the shielded container sidewall lead?

Let us cross the river and rest in the shade of the trees.
