The Omnibus Appropriations Act of 2009, authorized the Integrated University Program (IUP) for 10 years for a total of $45 million per year: $15 million each to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the U.S. Department of Energy, and the National Nuclear Security Administration.
The IUP provides grants to academic institutions to support education in nuclear science and engineering to develop a workforce capable of supporting the design, construction, operation, and regulation of nuclear facilities and the safe handling of nuclear materials.
To date, the NRC has awarded 471 IUP grants, including 133 faculty development, 121 scholarship, 136 fellowship, and 81 trade school and community college scholarship grants. More than 130 faculty and 4,200 students have received support.
The NRC has invested more than $145 million in its IUP to support programs in nuclear engineering and related disciplines.
