k Gentlemen

  • Reference is made to our License R-65, USAEC Docket 50-47 We wish to brihg to your attention the loss of some low level liquid waste from a retention tank into the ground adjacent to the nuclear reactor j

facility. The total activity lost was approximately 10 microcuries (con-l centration approximately 5.7 x 10-7 microcuries per milliliter). The loss 1

was through a leak at the 11 foot level (approximately 2 feet below ground) f of the underground concrete retention tank (capacity 40,000 gallons - see

{

f Figure VII-B of S.A.R. dated 5 July 1968). The tank is located southwest of the containment shell, adjacent to Building 97-(see Figure II-C of S.A.R. dated 5 July 1968). The nearest property line is at a distance of about 75 feet. Due to the nature of the soil (clay) i't'is believed that the activity was retained close to the site of the leak and because of the j

distance to the uncontrolled area (75 ft.), the probability of the activity I

having reached an uncontrolled area is negligible.

The leak was detected on 27 February 1969. Since no hazard to the public was considered to have occurred, it was not considered necessary to report it previously. Further review raised the question whether it is required to be reported under Paragraph 4E of our License R-65, Amendment No. 3 To.

eliminate any further question, the matter is herein reported. The Icak will be repaired and, in the meanwhile, a restriction has been established not to exceed the 11 foot level in the retention tank.

Sincerely, gnev... /
