Appendin NOTICE OF VIOLATION l

Kerr-McGee Nuclear Corporation Docket No.70-925 As a result of the special inspection conducted on July 15-16, 19S1, and in accordance with the Interim Enforcement Policy, 45 FR 66754 (October 7, 1980), the following violation was identified:

10 CFR 20.103(a)(3) requires that suitable measurements of concentrations of ;adioactive materials in air be used for detecting and evaluating air-borne radioactivity in restricted areas for determining compliance with 10 CFR 20.103. The regulatory limit for exposure to airborne soluble uranium is stated in 10 CFR 20.103(a)(2) and footnote 4 to Appendix B of 10 CER Part 20.

Contrary to the above, suitable measurements of airborne concentrations for determining compliance with 20.103(a)(2) were not made during decontamina-tion work in March and April 1981.

In particular, two workers were engaged in work in an area with high probability of exposure to concentrations of soluble uranium, and their work environment was inadequately monitored with air sampling devices.

i Based on bioassay results, exposures to the two in-i dividuals may have exceeded the airborne concentration exposure limit for soluble uranium.

This is a Severity Level III violation (Supplement IV).

The inspection showed that action had been t'a' ken to correct the identified item of noncompliance and to prevent recurrence.

Consequently, no reply to this item of noncompliance is required, and we have no further questions regarding this matter.
