December 10, 1986 CHAIRMAN l

The Honorable Alan Simpson, Chairman Subcommittee on Nuclear Regulation Comittee on Environment and Public Works United States Senate Washington, D.C.

Dear Mr. Chairman:

The Office of Inspector and Auditor (01A) recently submitted to the Comission a report on Region IV activities concerning the Comanche Peak Steam Electric Station.

Enclosed is a copy of that report. Also enclosed is a list of attachments to the report which, because of their length (over 3000 pages), have not been included. Shouldyouwanttoreviewanyorall*I of the attachments, please have your staff contact our Office of Congressional Affairs (634-1443) to make suitable arrangements.

I am also enclosing a Note to Editors and an edited version of the report which we plan to release to the public on Friday, December 12, 1986. The reasons for sending you an edited version is so that you may readily see those portions of the report which have been deleted from public release.

I respectfully ask that access to the unedited report be restricted to members and staff of the Subcommittee.

For your information, the Comission asked the Executive Director for Operations to inform us of what actions he has taken and other actions he would recommend as a result of his review of the report.

I will inform you of further developments in this matter.

Sincerely, h-

[.
