SUBJECT: NRC INSPECTION REPORT 50-361/98-07; 50-362/98-07 AND NOTICE OF
VIOLATION
Dear Mr. Ray:
From June 7 through July 11,1998, a routine announced inspection was conducted at your
San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station, Units 2 and 3 reactor facilities. The enclosed report
presents the scope and results of that inspection.
During the 5-week period covered by this inspection, your conduct of activities at the
San Onofre facilities was generally characterized by safety-conscious operation, sound
engineering and maintenance practices, and careful radiological work controls.
One violation of NRC requirements was identified during the inspection. The NRC has
concluded that information regarding the reason for the violation, the corrective actions taken
and planned to correct the violation and prevent recurrence is already adequately addressed on
the docket in this inspection report. Therefore, you are not required to respond to this letter
unless the description therein does not accurately reflect your corrective actions or your
position. In that case, or if you choose to provide additional information, you should follow the
instructions specified in the enclosed Notice.
In accordance with 10 CFR 2.790 of the NRC's " Rules of Practice," a copy of this letter, its
enclosures, and your response will be placed in the NRC Public Document Room (PDR).
Should you have any questions concerning this inspection, we will be pleased to discuss them
with you.
