Dear Mr. Cottle:
I
SUBJECT:
GRAND GULF NUCLEAR STATION, UNIT 1 - AUDIT OF-PIPE SUPPORT CALCULATIONS (TAC NO. 71863)
During an audit of pipe support design calculations for.the alternate decay heat removal system (ADHRS) on January 4 and 5, 1989, we found that not all shear stress components caused by torsional loads had been considered.. Froin discussions with System Energy Resources, Inc; (SERI) engineering personnel,.
'l your staff advised us that the method of calculation for supports on other safety-related systems was the same as the method used for the ADHRS.
In response to our January 25, 1989 letter, and the meeting in Rockville, l
l-Maryland on February 14, 1989, SERI's letter dated February 22, 1989 reported l
on its method of analysis used in the design of pipe supports.
The' report I
concluded that the SERI's simplified approach is conservative compared to the method recommended by the American Institute of Steel Construction. We are.
reviewing this information and need additional information regarding the design of supports for safety-related piping systems.
]
On that basis, our staff and consultant, Engineering' Analysis Services, Inc.,
will visit the Grand Gulf Nuclear Station, Unit.1, on March 20 to 24, 1989, for l
the purpose of auditing piping support calculations for safety-related systems.
I An agenda for the visit is enclosed. The proposed visit was discussed with your representatives on March 9 and 13, 1989.
In those discussions, we advised 1
that our visit should have little effect on the refueling outage starting on March 17. Paragraph 4 of the enclosed visit agenda explains the small amount of direct assistance required.
The reporting and/or recordkeeping requirements of this letter affect fewer than 10 respondents; therefore, OMB clearance is not required under P.L.96-511.
Sincerely, 8903230376 890314

ENCLOSURE AGENDA FOR THE PROPOSED VISIT TO THE GRAND GULF NUCLEAR STATION 1.
. Arrival: March 20,1989, 8:30 a.m.
2.
Expected departure: March 24, 1989, 10:00'a.m.
3.
Activities during the visit:
Audit of selected calculations pertinent to pipe supports in 1
the-following systems:
highpressurecoolantsystem(HPCS).
lowpressurecoolantsystem(LPCS) low pressure cooling injection systems (A,8 & C) main steam lines inside containment l
feedwater lines inside containment recirculation of reactor coolant reactor water clean system inside containment The calculation packages in the above systems to be reviewed will be randomly selected and the extent of the audit will depend on such i
factors as: the time available, complexity of the analyses, etc.
An audit of the associated piping analyses may be necessary to i
the extent where it is dictated by the interactions between the i
piping and the pipe supports.
4.
Requested support from SERI a.
entranceandexitmeetings(15-30minuteseach) b.
explanation of the filing system in the record vault to facilitate the retrievability of the documents to be audited c.
two thirty minute meetings per day between the NRC staff and the SERI cognizant' engineer. One meeting in the morning and one in the afternoon will be held to answer any concerns which might be raised during the audit.
