Subject:
Catawba Nuclear Station' Units 1 and 2 Docket Nos. 50-413 and 50-414 Technical Specification Amendment Unit 2 Reactor Trip on Turbine Trip
Dear Sir:
This letter is in response to telephone conference calls between Duke Power personnel and members of the NRC Staff concerning the license amendment application dated July 27, 1987. This amendment request was to allow the moving of the hydraulic oil pressure. sensors from the main turbine control valves to the main turbine stop valves.
The placement of the sensors on the stop valves will not result in any adverse affects on any plant systems as a result of any tran::tients analyzed in the Catawba FSAR..The control valves and the stop valves are supplied hydraulic oil from +.he same system and sense the same oil pressures. The sensors will be remounted on the sama elevation that they are currently located on.
The main
' difference this relocation will make will be the alleviation of unnecessary reactor trips from the' pressure sensors when the control valves move in response to a Power Load-Unbalance signal.
In this situation the control valves are normally throttled back but the stop valves will remain open. After this change.
is implementc.d only a true turbine trip (which will. result in the closing of the stop valves) will generate a reactor trip signal.
If there are any further questions, pleasa contact Mr. Roger Que11ette at (704)373-7530.
i As this letter is a supplement to a previous amendment request no application fees are required.
Very truly yours, f
