Arkansas Power & Light Company Dockets: 50-313 Arkansas Nuclear One 50-368 Licenses: DPR-51 NPF-6 l

During an NRC irspection conducted during the periods May 4-8 and June 8-12,  ;

1987, a' violation of NRC requirements was identified. The violation involved failure to provide fire resistance protection to structural steel that is framed into or supperts a fire barrier. In accordance with the " General Statement of Policy and Procedure for NRC Enforcement Actions," 10 CFR Part 2, Appendix C (1987), the violation is listed below:

According to 10 CFR 50, Appendix R, paragraph III.G.2, one of the means of ensuring that one of the redundant trains is free of fire damage is to provide separation of cables and equipment and associated nonsafety I circLits of redundant trains by a fire barrier having a 3-hour rating.

Structural steel forming a part of or supporting such fire barriers shall be protected to provide fire resistance equivalent to that required of the '

barrier.

l Contrary to the.above, structural steel was found in Room 111 in Unit 1 and Rooms 2055 and 2084 in Unit 2 supporting a fire barrier and unprotected from the effects of a fire.

Pursuant to the provisions of 10 CFR 2.201, Arkansas Power & Light Company is l hereby required to submit a written st6tement or explanation to this office within 30 days of the date of the letter transmitting this Notice. This reply,

should include for each violation: (1) the reason for the violation if admitted (2) the corrective steps that have been taken and the results achieved, (3) the corrective steps that will be taken to avoid further violations, and (4) the date when full compliance will be acnieved. Where good-cause is shown, consideration will be given to extending the response time.
