General installation information Cleauliness is of great importance in the making of any splice. The splicer's hands should be clean, particularly when applying the* tapes, 'I and every reasonable precaution should be taken to exclude dirt and moisture while the work is in process. In a hot environment, sweat bands around the splicer's wrists will I tend to prevent perspiration from accumulating on the hands. Use of sweat bands is recommended. Splicing of Coax and Triax cables shall ny be permitted for class IE cables. Cables in the 480-V and medium-voltage class shall not be spliced inside tae cable spreading room. I t ,3 No splicing of insulated cable shall be made in cable trays located in Category I structures, except in electrical manholes or handholes.
- a Eltewhere, splicing of Class IE cables within Category I structures Ig shall be made in splice boxes or metal enclosures, and documented on cable pull cards. Splices shall be staggered to avoid physical build-up in the box, enclosure, or tray where applicable. Cables shall be
_l supported so that there is no mechanical load on the splice. Each E spliced circuit shall have a permanent identification cable tag or marker with its unique designation as shown on ?.he cable schedule or pull card, installed adjacent to the completed splice as shown on standard drawing SD-E15.3.4. Splicing of conductors shall generally be accomplished by means of butt splices crimped onto the wires by means of appropriate tools. Because of differences between tools and terminals of the listed manufacturers, it is important to follow closely the manufacturer's I instructior.s applicable to the specific installation being made. Terminals and splices of a company shall always be installed with a tool purchased from or certified by that company to ensure a care-fully controlled uniform pressure crimp. 'I Splicing of medium-voltage (5-15kV) power conductors shall be insulated with 3M Company splicing kit in accordance with standard drawing SD-1 E12.5.3. Where waterproof splice is required use Raychen's 1K.SF type N material and install as shown in step B.4 of the above standard ) drawing. i l Splicing of med-voltage power cables shall be allowed where the lengths of cable required exceed the length of the cable on the reel. Rev. 5 6.0 PROCEDURE (Cont.) A. (Cont.) i Either noninsulated or self-insulated butt splices may be installed in systems of 600V or less and wire size No.10 AWG and smaller. Self-I insulated butt splices within the primary containment shall be either Tefzel (Thomas and Betts Company) or Kynar (ANP Specist Industries). The vinyl or nylon self-insulated fittings are intended for applications where the total temperature of the conductor does not exceed 105'c (221'F). Splices of 600V or less, wire size No. 8 AWG and larger, and those of the nonir:sulated type for smaller wires shall be insulated with Ray-chem Corporation WCSF-N splice covers and installed in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions using an electric heat gun (do not use torch with open flame) available from Raychem as the heat source. ) Unless otherwise noted on design drawings (reference Attachment 3), cables with rubber or rubber-like (silicone) 125'C or more insulation, in systems of 600V or less, shall be spliced by one of the following procedures:
- 't Install noninsulated butt splice of appropriate size and build up c.
over exposed copper surfaces with 3M Company, Scotch 70 tape (temp-erature rating of 180*C) to a thickness equal to the original in-sulation. The use of Raychen's WCSF-N shall be used as a replace-ment for the Jacket material. b. For splices in multiple-conductor cable, splice and insulate the single conductors in accordance with a. above. The use of Ray-I chem's WCSF-N (section 2.2.3) shall be used as a replacement for the Jacket material for the overall Jacket, and shall be installed as shown in Attachment 2. Install self-i isulated butt splices for wire size No.10 AWG and c. smaller. Self-insulated butt splices shall be either Tefzel or Kynar. These self-insulated butt splices are intended for ap-I plications where the total temperature of the conductor does not exceed 150'C (300'F), e.g., within primary containment. I d. All splice connections to motors or similar type leads using lugs or bt.tt sleeves (insulated and noninsulated) shall have the appropriate size WCSF type Raychem sleeve placed over the splice. No boot is I required on the multi conductor cable jacket. This connection will be treated as a termination rather than a splice. I The followins list serves as a guide only to the splice types (attached) for the various penetrations: . i. .'.hc..
